KlimaHotel

This project meeting the KlimaHotel standards has been conceived as an extension of the hotel of skier Gustav Thöni’s family, built in the 1970’s on the foundations of a 19th Century guesthouse. It guarantees economic, ecological and sociocultural sustainability through zero-kilometre and low-tech materials such as trafoi stone, wood and glass and climate management. With twenty-five new family-size rooms, a parlour, a spa (340 m2), a cellar, a ski storage room, and an area for children, the building is a nest for the new users of sustainable tourism.

Hotel Bellavista is the pilot project for the KlimaHotel certification. The certification of accommodation facilities is based on the three pillars of sustainability: nature (ecology), life (socio-cultural aspects) and transparency (economy) and aims at sustainability at 360° degrees: the use of local resources, local culinary traditions, effective waste management. Unbuilt.

CLIMAHOTEL CERTIFICATION

Certifying Sustainability: The ClimaHotel Energy Seal

The ClimaHotel brand grew out of a fruitful collaboration with the CasaClima® agency, thereby extending the latter’s successful CasaClima® brand to the hospitality industry. The certification guarantees tourists quality lodging and a respect for nature, and offers hotel managers concrete support through investment operations geared toward sustainable tourism (www.agenziacasaclima.it). The ClimaHotelProtocol The ClimaHotel brand is based on three keys in the measurement of the aspects that characterize the life cycle and operation of hotel facilities, and help assess environmental and socioeconomic consequences: Nature (ecology), Life (sociocultural aspects), and Transparency (economics).

Nature: Energy (efficiency of a building’s envelope, overall efficiency), land (building materials, waste management, mobility), water (water cycle, water resources management). Life: The relationship between the structure and the guest’s well-being. Man (environmental comfort and accessibility), environment (quality of interior spaces, quality of the environment), authenticity (use of local materials, regionalization). Transparency: An assessment of areas related to quality (durability of design and organization), costs (investment and management), and communication (participation and awareness).

ClimaHotel: Pilot Project

As a concept for a new hotel idea, this project illustrates the benefits to the hotel industry of designing in accordance with a protocol of rules and criteria certifying that the quality provided complies with environmental guidelines. In the pilot project for the first ClimaHotel, the architecture is tamed by nature, seeking to establish a dialogue with it rather than dominate it. A series of berms almost completely hides the structure. Stones stacked on the grass-covered roofs are a reference to the spirit of the place and the ancestral relationship between man and nature, reminiscent of the “stone men” (Stoanerne Mandln) placed along mountain trails to mark the way. The apartments are burrowed into the ground, partially burying the structure to reduce the surface area exposed to the elements and to optimize the accumulation of natural heat through fully glazed façades. The excellent insulating properties of the sod-covered roofs aid in controlling the interior climate, thereby contributing significantly to the hotel’s energy efficiency. A heat pump enables the exploitation of the constant temperature of natural spring water and the reduction of the heating systems’ CO2 emissions. The wood and stone used for the furniture and walls create a comfortable setting thanks to their multisensory properties.
